I believe in it because I know what it has done for me and for other people. I also believe in it because I believe in Jesus. If He believed in prayer, and did it often, then it stands to reason that we should believe in it also.

I came up with a little phrase a while back to remind me to pray in times when I’m anxious, worried, or otherwise just stressed about something. I just think, “call your dad.” It’s short. It’s quippy. It’s everything you want in a quick reminder to do something. I like it so much that I considered for a long time getting a tattoo of it on my arm. The problem is I’m just too chicken for a tattoo.

A Lookback at Season 3

Creativity is Suffering

The problem with having a new idea is that it’s a coin toss whether your new idea is a flash of creative brilliance, or something really stupid. If the idea has never been done before, or at least not that you’re aware of, it’s like stranded on an island. You have no feedback and the only chance you have is to just chuck your little bottle in the ocean and hope somebody somewhere picks it up and doesn’t immediately chuck it back.

Activation Energy

I’ve hit yet another weekend and yet another huge opportunity to do something creative. Something that pushes me forward. Something that really kicks the can down the road, or whatever it is the kids say these days. Yet here I sit with no real idea of where I should start. Should I start working on that fun point-and-click adventure game idea I have? Should I write that neat neo-noir sci-fi retro-futuristic detective novel I’ve been daydreaming about for years? Should I just clean the house? All perfectly valid questions and all things that take an absurd amount of activation energy.

Reintroduction

I finally did something that I’ve been thinking about for a long time, and I think I’m glad I made the decision. It’s been a long time since I’ve had more than one show using the name and even longer since we’ve had more than one of us dorks piloting the ship, so I felt it was time for a change.

Back in the Habit

You like that title? This one definitely fits my vibe a bit better and I like most of it. I guess it feels like that because it is like that.

This year was a little bit harder for me mentally than I expected. Not the Con itself, but the lead up to it. We paused Those Were The Days early in the Summer because the hosts are always busier and doing our ‘homework’ is more challenging. It also works since we’re a re-watch podcast and classic TV always took a seasonal break. TVsTravis also had just shipped our last season of 24FPS Presents… as well. That means I haven’t had a ton of time in front of a mic lately.

Iko Uwais in The Raid: Redemption

Tony Jaa in The Protector

Chow Yun Fat in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

Jean Claude van Damme in Hard Target

Supergirl (2026)

Rating: ★★★★ (4.0/5)

Last year, Superman came out with David Corenswet dawning the red, yellow, and blue and it may be the best iteration of Superman since Christopher Reeve put on the suit.

I’m happy to report that Milly Alcock has totally kept that streak alive as comes to the House of El.

I’ve been excited for this movie since I found out that they were making it and I have to say that it didn’t let me down at all. It kind of looked like Guardians of the Galaxy or Thor: Ragnarok in its art style, and that’s definitely not a bad thing. The blockbusters. The ones full of superheroes, larger than life characters, and plots where the world is at stake. Which is funny to me because some of my favorite movies that I’ve ever seen, my treasures, are quiet stories about normal people. This movie is no exception.

This story is so incredibly human and real, and it’s played out by some absolute gems of actors. I think Lewis Pullman has become one of my favorite actors of his generation. He’s incredibly talented and has such an amazing range. This movie itself really showcases his talent in telling stories with his face, and he’s paired next to the GOAT, Sally Field. She is doing some incredible work in this movie as a widowed and lonely woman who generally just wants to be left alone.

Jackie Chan in Drunken Master II

Jet Li in Fist of Legend

Michael Jai White in Undisputed II - I’m not much of a cool kid, but why not give this a try and see if I can come up with some fun things I did. I guess I could just make a list. Yeah, let’s make a list first.

Sold my 1991 F150 and bought a 2021 Ranger

Went to Las Vegas and met some podcast heroes of mine

Went to Disney World for a week with some of my favorite people on the planet

Had my 40th birthday and it was spectacular because my wife is incredible

Went to the mountains in Gatlinburg. It was beautiful

Got back into serving in my church which was incredibly fulfilling

Brought my best friend into my small group and it has been wonderful for us all

Went on the annual small group camping trip and learned we had what it takes to camp in the rain

Rode horses a few times with my dad

Remodeled our office. First time putting in vinyl flooring

Hosted seven panels at Dragon Con

Launched and completed two seasons of 24 FPS Presents… with Travis

Got promoted to Principal Software Engineer

And probably a lot more stuff…

Well that’s quite the 2025 when you put it into a bulleted list. I’m not sure I did everything I ever set out to do or if I met all the expectations that I had for my year, but I’d be willing to say that’s pretty good stuff. I took a lot of trips this year. I had more paid time off than usual because my parents were closer so we didn’t have to take four days to go see them every once in a while. More on that later.

Thirteen Lives (2022)

Rating: ★★★★★ (5.0/5)

There are a lot of movies based on true events out there. Some of them are factual, some of them are basically complete fabrications, and some of them are entertaining. This one manages to be both factual, engaging, and incredibly entertaining. How could you really expect anything less when we’re talking about the GOAT true events director, Ron Howard. This is the guy that made Apollo 13, for crying out loud. I love this movie. It’s perfection.

TWTD - Mickey's Christmas Carol

TWTD - A Muppet Family Christmas

Christopher Robin (2018)

Rating: ★★★★½ (4.5/5)

I hadn’t thought about this movie in a long time other than to think, “that was a good one.” Then my son was curious about it. Did anyone else wonder how they got Ethan the tape if he’s on the run and they don’t know where he is? I mean, if they used a dead drop they could stake it out, if they sent it to him then they know where he is, and if they picked someone to take it to him wouldn’t they just follow? We streamed all day on 12/5/2025 and managed to raise $2070 for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. I’m so thankful for all the people that came out and contributed some of their hard earned dollars to helping make some kids’ Christmastime a little bit brighter.

We played some great stuff this time:

Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping

Squats for Tots (more on that in a minute)

A Short Hike

Peak

Hollow Knight (sam’s stream)

Dungeons and Dragons

We were cruising along and getting hyped for our 3rd annual Squats for Tots event which involves me and Ashley doing a squat for every $5 that someone donates to the charity. Seems like a good idea, right? It is a good idea because for the last 3 years we’ve nearly hit our goal during that 2 hour block alone. The bad idea part is when you’re 40 and haven’t exercised a lot in the last few months and are more out of shape than you’ve been in the last 3 years you’ve done then exercise. This one was so dark so much of the time. I was also thrown off by Mads Mikkelson taking over as Grindelwald. Not mad about it, but it was a bit jarring. Her laugh lives rent free in my head.

It’s a simple plot. A guy who owes a bunch of money to some loan sharks runs for cover and ends up faking the identity of a long lost friend of a wealthy family man. The shenanigans that ensure are made all the better thanks to Sinbad and Phil Hartman’s amazing chemistry. They are so much fun on screen together. Phil Hartman was a treasure and seeing him in something like this makes me all the more sad that we were denied more of his work. I didn’t love any of the characters, I didn’t think the American setting was all that great (looking at you no-maj), and the beasts in the movie honestly grossed me out a little.

I came away this time a little more appreciative of it.

The movie follows Newt Scamander, the author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which is an in-universe book that’s used at Hogwarts to teach wizards about, well, fantastic beasts. It’s kind of fun that they would go back in time to the 1920s to see who Newt Scamander was and why he would write a book about beasts. Turns out he’s a fairly awkward guy who really has more interest in animals than people.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)

Rating: ★★★★ (4.0/5)

I love this movie. At the time Steve Martin was very known for being a “wild and crazy guy” and this has him playing a very believable businessman curmudgeon.

It also has loads of heart. John Candy’s “I like me” speech stands out as one of the highlights of his whole career and it’s really not that long. You as a viewer didn’t have any information beyond the characters and it made it so much more intense than some other “meteor going to blow up earth” movies are.

Casino Royale

TWTD - Kolchak: The Night Stalker - S1E2

Skyfall (2012)

Rating: ★★★★ (4.0/5)

When I originally watched Skyfall in the theatre when it came out, it was the first Bond movie that I felt like I could follow from start to finish and the plot was clear. It was also a movie that included so many little baby steps back to being the Bond we know and love from before the Pierce Brosnan era. We got the Astin Marin, we got Q, we got a new M, and we got that M’s office with the padded door. It’s a tradition we’ve held since 2021, when we all really needed to get away and spend some time with each other and with God in nature.

It grew out of a bit of a desire for adventure. We all work city jobs in a city setting, and generally sit while doing it. It made sense to take ourselves out of the comfort of every day and go to the somewhat less comfortable outdoors. My friend, Brian, knew a guy who lived in a mountain community that has a pretty great campsite. It’s not exactly in the middle of nowhere, but it’s not nicer than any other campsite just because it’s in some community. We’re down in a valley next to a beautiful creek, and at night you would bet there was no one around for miles. It’s beautiful and quiet and an excellent break from the norm. Not to mention there isn’t a single cell phone provider that works down there. I’m effectively cut off from society for a full weekend.

The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

Rating: ★★★★ (4.0/5)

If there is a top Roger Moore Bond film, I definitely agree that this is the one. I’m more in line with the critics, if maybe even a bit higher.

I get that this movie is the worst of the Sean Connery films, but I’d say its far from bad. I had a good time with it. That being said, this all comes down to what makes a Bond movie. This has all the ingredients for a great Bond film: an interesting villain in Blofeld, cool gadgets, Sean Connery, women. Okay that last one is a stretch because the writers had no idea what to do with women at this age of cinema, particularly with James Bond. All in all though, this has the stuff of a good Bond movie, it’s just the decisions made that I think knock it down a few rungs.

Diamonds Are Forever

Dragon Con 2025

I made it back from Dragon Con! What a wild ride that was. It was probably one of my favorite Dragon Cons that I’ve participated in, I definitely learned a lot of lessons I hope to take with me to the next one.

We got there Thursday afternoon after driving six hours and I thought I would definitely need to valet park when I got there because that’s usually how it works. There are only so many parking places in the self-park and I figured they would all be gone when I got there. By the time I realize there was still room to self-park I’d already committed to letting the dude at the check-in take my car and charge me a $20 premium to park it for me. So began the journey of me spending too much throughout the whole weekend, but we’re going to try not to get into that. The struggle started really when I got the bags out of the car and handed them over to the bellhop. His name was Eddie and he was actually a really nice dude.

Season 2 Teaser

Pre-Con Jitters

We’re on the eve of my annual trek to Atlanta where I gather together with a bunch of other nerds and pretend we’re the coolest people in the world for a weekend. I can’t wait! Some people get hyped for the Super Bowl, but I’m sitting here getting hyped to wander around a bunch of hotels with 80,000 other weirdos. For me, getting to be a part of the Digital Media Track at Dragon Con is a bit of a dream come true. It looked like a fun movie but Disney’s marketing machine just had no idea what to do with it and that’s a shame. I told him they put me on steroids for 5 days and he shook his head and told me that was not nearly long enough. The guy was super sure of himself, but I think that might be what I needed anyway. Most of it’s pretty warranted. There are things that AI is doing or can do that’s pretty messed up and terrifying. I get the concern and I’m well aware of all the challenges we face, but the key to the whole thing is that it’s not going anywhere. If we’re going to ignore it, we’re going to get left behind. Maybe that’s what some folks want, and that’s okay, but I think it’s worth looking at it logically. There’s some guy that I’m sure insisted the automobile was never going to take off so he went broke making buggy parts. Someone got angry that people were able to use google and find all the information that they once had to study at the library. Even more recently, someone is angry that YouTube has made it possible to learn anything you want from any number of unreliable sources. Artificial Intelligence is just another tool in the toolbox that someone will embrace and someone else will say makes everything too easy.

Fast X

TWTD - Re-Run - The Mary Tyler Moore Show

Superman (2025)

Rating: ★★★★★ (5.0/5)

This review may contain spoilers.

I have been excited for this Superman movie since the day I heard James Gunn was going to take a stab at bringing him back to the screen.
